His comments may encourage other bidders to come forward.

Royal Bank of Scotland has been cited as one potential bidder that might be able to pay a better price if it sold ABN Amro’s Brazilian operations to another bank.

Barclays’ talks with the Dutch bank were prompted by calls for a break-up from an activist investor The Children’s Investment Fund.

At the time, Nout Wellink told a Dutch newspaper that the break-up would be a bridge too far.

Now, he appears to have changed his mind, having told the FT what will happen if a solid bank takes over with a strategy to restructure.

Let them come to the supervisor, and we will look at it, and when it looks fine there will be no problem whatsoever, he said.

It’s been more than a century since a Russian surgeon first described the simple and precise way to measure blood pressure that is still in use. We’ve learned a lot since then about what influences blood pressure and about how high blood pressure can wreak havoc throughout the body. What we haven’t managed to do is get the public, and a fair number of doctors, to take high blood pressure seriously. Nearly two-thirds of the 65 million American adults with high blood pressure don’t have it under control. That’s a big problem, because it’s a major cause of stroke, heart attack, heart and kidney failure, and early death.

Blood pressure basics

Some pressure is absolutely essential for circulation. Without it, blood couldn’t move from the heart to the brain and toes and back again. The heart provides the driving force — each contraction of the left ventricle, the heart’s main pumping chamber, creates a wave of pressure that passes through the aorta and all the arteries in the body.

Relaxed and flexible arteries offer a healthy amount of resistance to each pulse of blood. Arteries that are tensed, constricted, or rigid offer more resistance, which shows up as higher blood pressure. It also makes the heart work harder.

High blood pressure is not a disease. Instead, it is a sign that something isn’t right in the heart, blood vessels, kidneys, or elsewhere. Sometimes it stems from the overproduction of hormones by the thyroid or adrenal glands. It can also be caused by the use of prescription or over-the-counter medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, pseudoephedrine, some antidepressants, steroids, and others. Most of the time, though, high blood pressure can’t be traced to a specific source.

Doctors use the term hypertension. We’ll stick with the more descriptive high blood pressure. Both mean the same thing.

The sad but unpalatable truth is that these signs might not indicate High Blood Pressure and this means that you have to be even more alert regarding your own potential well being. Anyone can suffer from High Blood Pressure or Hypertension but the incidence of this condition occurring does rise if you are in one of the following demographic groups:

* Men over the age of 55
* Women over the age of 65
* People with blood relatives who have hypertension
* Post-menopausal women
* Some women who take birth control pills
* People who get little or no regular physical activity
* People who eat a poor diet, with a high salt intake
* People who smoke
* People who are overweight
* People with high cholesterol
* People with diabetes

If you feel that any (or several) of these conditions above apply to you then the answer is loud and clear - GET IT CHECKED OUT NOW. Most people are reluctant to bother their GP about something that might not appear to be anything at all but the bottom line is that most GP’s would like to be “ahead of the game” when dealing with conditions like this and would rather ere on the side of caution rather than be forced to embark upon a course of damage limitation at a later date.

So, does Blood Pressure increase after the Menopause and can this develop into serious High Blood Pressure. Yes possibly. Blood pressure increases after menopause and so does the risk of high blood pressure.

There has been a bit of debate in certain circles as to whether these changes are truly “change of life changes” or just consequence of getting older and the associate increased likelihood of weight gain.

The various Research teams that have looked into this have taken these various factors into consideration and have concluded that “Post Menopausal” women are at higher risk of getting serious High Blood Pressure than “Pre-Menopausal” women.
One of the key factors here, they think might be oestrogen as this may have quite a protective role in keeping Blood Pressure low.

There are differences however (as any good Chemist will tell you) and the most basic diffeence is that Potassium within the body is found as a chemical within the body cells whereas Sodium can be fond to alarge degree in the fluids around and between the cells.

A major survey in 1999 by researchers from John Hopkins University in Baltimore in the US found that Potassium proved more helpful in People with severe High Blood Pressure and those who ate diets high in Salt than Sodium.

How much is safe to take? Well there are no recomended daily intake levels of Potassium. The average daily consumption is reckoned to be between 2,000 and 3,500 milligrams per day and the source of this is either from Food or vitamin supplements. It is reckoned that a daily intake level of between 2,000 and 6,000 milligrams is safe to consume and the only real side effects………………belching and flatulence…..you really wanted to know that didn’t you?

Other side effects are extremely rare that it is not really safe to directly associate any with an intake of Potassium.

OK so that is the sort of answer that is going to annoy the hell out of most people (especially those who are suffering from High Blood Pressure for reasons beyond their control) but the sad and inescapable fact is that there are a large number of us (yours truly if I am being totally honest) who quite possibly could have avoided getting it in the first place if we had remembered to put our “brain into gear” when we get up in the morning!

The thing is that the pace of modern day life (certainly here in the UK ) is almost always a killer and the stress that comes almost every day from a growing number of sources makes it almost impossible to avoid. That having been said, it can be avoided and people do - so back to the initial question, how to help High Blood Pressure?

The first thing almost all of us have had to do at some time or another is take a complete reality check on our day to day activities and the way we interact with the outside world. It is no joke, High Blood Pressure will kill you if you don’t do anything about it, so what can be done?

Hmnnnn. Six Million Dollar question here folks. In some cases it means completely altering the way you live from Diet and baic exercise upwards. The first thing is possibly to get a grip on your weight and exercise regime. That is to say if you don’t do any exercise or at the least very little then now is the time to start.

The key thing here and probably right across the board is that whatever you do, make it sustainable. Anyone can decide they are going to take up jogging in the mild balmy days of summer but it is not quite so funny during the cold rainy days of January (unless you really have some iron will and discipline - things yours truly fantasises about really) so be real and make it something you can (with alittle amount of effort) keep going at and turn into something meaningful.

I had an appointment with my optician recently to check out my eyes for new glasses. I hadn’t changed my old prescription for nearly two years and felt that once again my arms weren’t long enough when it came to reading.

The first thing the optician did was to check the blood pressure in my eyes by way of a number of tests - none of which unpleasant and all of which extremely revealing in their findings.

There are numerous “snake oil” salesmen out there who will try and sell unfortunates on the concept of the “one true diet pill” but unless you are getting this advice from your doctor or Medical Practitioner then steer clear of this type of advice.

The problem is that you are more than probably already on other types of medication for your High Blood Pressure and it is the way that all of these medicines interact with each other that may be the problem and may cause unwelcome side effects.

Still it is a term that for some reason people use to search when what they really mean is how much of a connection is there between artery damage to the Heart and High Blood Pressure and to what degree is the damage caused?

Hmmmmn….hard one that. There is a connection there is no doubt but in many ways it is almost like which came first the Chicken or the egg. High Blood Pressure if caused by other reasons and left untreated can cause a weakening of the arteries however it is also true that clogged arteries can lead to an increase in Blood Pressure.

Clearer? Possibly not.

You have to take better care of yourself, go easy on the Alcohol, food etc. Coffee good or bad for the High Blood Pressure? My experience has been that it was bad for me raising my blood pressure up by about 15 points.

Exercise is another good way of treating yourself - again another simplistic viewpoint but in my case it seems to be working.

In general, the following mantra has to be observed, get more exercise and lose some weight, cut back on the things that are causing you stress and go easy on the intake of artificial stimulants.

It might not be enough in all cases and indeed in some there will always be a need for High Blood Pressure Medication but it can be done.

For example, self-relaxation approaches to the therapy of hypertension include yoga, biofeedback, and meditation.

These techniques can, in fact, be effective in lowering the blood pressure, at least temporarily. In order to produce sustained reductions in the blood pressure, however, these techniques may require hours of diligent adherence daily. Therefore, they are generally practical only for few, highly motivated individuals with hypertension. Acupuncture has not yet been established as a standard or proven therapy for hypertension in the western world.

Apparently, (listen up at the back please) the yearly Winter Flu Jab can help reduce the number of fatal heart attacks, incidence of death and the number of unplanned emergency procedures that require work on the clogged arteries of patients with Coronary Artery Disease,

“Way to go, lets all pile down the Doc’s and get jabbed”

Without being accused of making too much of a joke about the above topic there is growing evidence apparently suggesting that people with Heart Disease or Heart Trouble generally should get a shot of the flu vaccination every year.

If you think about it the underlying logic behind it all is extremely sound. It is a common fact that people with Cardiovascular problems die of influenza every year, in fact in greater proportions that the norm. Therefore if you can prevent them getting influenza in the first place then you are a major step forward to preventing these deaths.
